How to prepare Sea Moss Gel
Sea Moss also known as ‘Irish moss’ is a sea alga commonly found in the Atlantic shorelines of Europe, the Caribbean Islands and North America. This sea algae is said to have medicinal properties that can help to treat numerous ailments.
Sea Moss is becoming an increasingly popular addition to many people’s diet due to its high mineral content. Did you know that out of the 102 minerals contained within the human body, Sea Moss can have up to 92 of them! It’s no wonder everyone is raving about this.

Of course, you can now buy premade Sea Moss gels, the work has been done for you, all you need to do is consume.
But for those of you who like to get a real feel for the product and do the preparation yourself, here are 2 quick and easy methods:
How to prepare Sea Moss Gel
BLENDING METHOD:
- Soak your dried Sea Moss in water overnight.
- Once the Sea Moss has been rehydrated, ensure you rinse thoroughly to wash off any excess salt.
- Add the Sea Moss to a high-speed blender and just about cover the contents with spring or distilled water.
- Blend until the Sea Moss is a smooth gel-like consistency.
- Once you have your desired consistency, pour into a sealable glass jar.
- Store in the fridge until use (Consume within 2-3 weeks).
THAT’S IT! Easy right?
For those of you who don’t have a blender, prefer a firmer gel consistency, or just want to do it the old-fashioned way like we do, you can also prepare the gel using the boing method.
BOILING METHOD:
- Soak your dried Sea Moss in water overnight.
- Once the Sea Moss has been rehydrated, ensure you rinse thoroughly to wash off any excess salt.
- Add the Sea Moss to a pot and just about cover the contents with water.
- Boil down on a low heat until the Sea Moss is a smooth gel-like consistency
- Pour the gel into a sealable glass jar and allow to cool
- Once the Sea Moss gel has cooled store in the fridge until use (Consume within 2-3 weeks).
It’s important to note that when you use the boiling the method, the gel will set into a firm consistency once it has cooled down. If you prefer your gel to be runny then we suggest sticking to the blending method. It all goes down the same, most of us will have a method/ consistency we prefer!
Now that you have prepared your Sea Moss you might be wondering how an earth you use this strange gel. Here’s a few tips:
How to use Sea Moss Gel
- Add 1-2 tbsp to water and drink as a daily health drink OR add 1-3 tbsp to your favourite smoothie to give it a delicious creamy consistency.
- Add 1-2 tbsp to your soups, stews, curries, and other dishes for an extra boost.
- You can also try applying our Sea Moss gel directly to the face as a natural face mask, just leave for 30 mins then rinse thoroughly.
- Sea Moss gel can also be used as a vegan gelatine replacement in vegan baking.
What does Sea Moss taste of?
Providing it has been prepared correctly and has been washed and rinsed prior to blending into a gel, the Sea Moss is pretty much tasteless and should not change the taste of any smoothie or food dish it is added to.
